Everton midfielder Tim Cahill will have his groin injury assessed later this week before a decision is made on whether he can face Newcastle on Sunday.

The 25-year-old helped Australia win a World Cup qualifying play-off against Uruguay last week before missing out on the 4-0 defeat to West Brom for his club.

Everton head physio Mick Rathbone told evertonfc.com: “Tim has a bit of a groin strain. He didn’t train on Monday and we will review him towards the end of the week but we have our fingers crossed.”

Cahill was expected to be given time on the sidelines by manager David Moyes after playing for two years without a significant rest period.
