United's Sbragia set for Bolton switch

Manchester United reserve team coach Ricky Sbragia is on the verge of quitting Old Trafford to join Bolton’s backroom staff.

Manchester United reserve team coach Ricky Sbragia is on the verge of quitting Old Trafford to join Bolton’s backroom staff.

The 49-year-old Scot has been a major success since joining United from Sunderland in 2002, steering the Red Devils second string to an unprecedented four trophies last term, and bringing through the likes of Darren Fletcher and Kieran Richardson.

But, with United scrapping one of their reserve sides during the summer and Sir Alex Ferguson letting a number of young players continue their development on loan at other clubs, Sbragia has decided his future lies elsewhere.

He is currently in discussions with Bolton boss Sam Allardyce and he is likely to link up with the Trotters on a permanent basis, working as first-team coach alongside Sammy Lee.

Although no firm decision has been made about Sbragia’s successor at United, it seems certain Brian McClair will be asked to carry out the role on a temporary basis.

McClair is due to replace Les Kershaw as United’s Academy chief in the summer.
