Brazil international Gilberto has signed a contract extension to keep him at Arsenal until 2009.

Brazil international Gilberto has signed a contract extension to keep him at Arsenal until 2009.

The 28-year-old midfielder has been identified as the long-term successor to departed captain Patrick Vieira following his move to Juventus.

And the Brazilian, who joined Arsene Wenger’s side in 2002 from Atletico Mineiro, will play for the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium until 2009 after extending his deal.

Gilberto came to prominence with an eye-catching performance at the 2002 World Cup and has won one Premiership title and two FA Cups with Arsenal.
