Owen deal headlines deadline day
England striker Michael Owen completed his move to Newcastle and there was a flurry of activity at Tottenham as the transfer window closure neared.
Owen, who has agreed a four-year contract with Newcastle, was unveiled in front of 15,000 fans at St James’ Park after leaving Real Madrid.
A large chunk of his transfer fee was recouped by Jermaine Jenas’ sale to Tottenham with the England midfielder, a member of Sven-Goran Eriksson’s squad for the World Cup qualifiers against Wales and Northern Ireland, finalising a switch to White Hart Lane.
Jenas was joined in north London by South Korean full-back Lee Young-Pyo, who moved from PSV Eindhoven for an undisclosed fee.
Space was made for the arrival of Jenas and Lee Young-Pyo in north London by the departure of two left-sided players, Erik Edman moving to Rennes for an undisclosed fee and Reto Ziegler accepting a loan spell at Hamburg.
In what was an otherwise successful day for Jol, Tottenham failed to strike a deal with Serie A club Livorno for their striker Cristiano Lucarelli.
Outside of Owen and Jenas, there was a dearth of big-name signings with various clubs indulging in a spot of squad strengthening without breaking the bank to do so.
Arsenal secured cover for goalkeeper Jens Lehmann, who is banned for the first two Champions League matches of the season, by landing Sunderland goalkeeper Mart Poom on loan until the end of the year.
Gunners defender Justin Hoyte, 20, has moved in the opposite direction on loan until the end of the season. England Under-21 international Hoyte has made 17 first-team appearances for Arsene Wenger’s side.
Everton clinched the permanent signing of Inter Milan winger Andy van der Meyde as the Dutch winger, formerly of Ajax, joined on a four-year deal for an undisclosed fee.
Van der Meyde came through a medical despite arriving in England with a groin strain which could delay his debut for the Toffees.
Blackburn swooped for Rangers’ Georgian international Zurab Khizanishvili with the 23-year-old defender arriving on an initial season-long loan with the option to make the move permanent. Rovers also signed David Bentley from Arsenal on loan until the end of the season.
Middlesbrough let Cameroon striker Joseph-Desire Job join Saudi Arabian side Al Ittihad on a year’s loan. The 27-year-old was finding his first-team chances limited at Boro.
Michael Reiziger also left Teesside, joining PSV Eindhoven on a free transfer.
Premiership newcomers Wigan strengthened their squad by luring Republic of Ireland striker David Connolly, 28, to the JJB Stadium after negotiating an initial fee of £2million with Leicester.
Charlton captured Icelandic attacking midfielder Rurik Gislason from HK Kopavogur with the 17-year-old agreeing a two-year deal at The Valley which could eventually cost Charlton £180,000, depending on his success.
Portsmouth tempted highly-rated Barcelona youngster Frank Songo’o to Fratton Park with big things expected of the France Under-19 international.
Aston Villa boss David O’Leary brought Eirik Bakke to the club on loan from Leeds until the end of January, reuniting the manager with the Norwegian midfielder who was a regular in his Elland Road teams.
