UEFA to receive report on racist chants
UEFA expect to receive a report from their delegate later today into the racist chanting directed at Liverpool striker Djibril Cisse in the Champions League qualifier against CSKA Sofia.
The French international scored the opening goal in a 3-1 victory in the first leg last night.
UEFA delegate Trygve Borno, from Norway, told Liverpool he would report the abuse and, if as expected it is decided there is a case to answer, CSKA would be called before a disciplinary panel next week.
A statement from the European governing body read: “UEFA is aware that incidents of a racist nature have taken place at the CSKA Sofia-Liverpool match, and is waiting to receive the official delegate’s report.
“At present, it seems probable that, should a disciplinary case be opened, it would be dealt with by the UEFA control and disciplinary body at their next meeting scheduled for August 18.”
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez expressed his disbelief at last night‘s scenes.
“There is no place for this,” said the Spaniard.
“The most important thing is that the UEFA man has said he will send in a report, he has done his job – but it is better not to talk too much about such things because all you do is to give more publicity to the situation.
“It was a pity, because their supporters had done a good job for their team supporting them so well. It was a big mistake to resort to such things."
