Littering caused by people raiding public bins for plastic bottles and aluminium cans since the introduction of the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) is costing Dublin City Council €1,000 a day.

The claim was contained in a briefing note prepared for chief executive Richard Shakespeare by Barry Woods, the council’s head of waste management services.
