Glazer glory won't win over fans
Malcolm Glazer could deliver the treble to Manchester United next season and it still would not quell the anger at his £790m (€1.1m) Old Trafford buy-out.
The American business tycoon has now established total control at United after taking his stake in the club to 75.70% yesterday.
Glazer will now pursue the option of cancelling the company’s Stock Market listing, allowing it to revert back into private hands before launching his plans to triple current profits.
He has already vowed to hand Alex Ferguson a £20m (€29.1m) summer transfer kitty in a bid to catch new champions Chelsea, who finished 18 points above the Red Devils in the Barclays Premiership table.
Yet the strength of opposition to the deal is such that even a repeat of the historic achievements in 1999 would not be enough to win over the major supporters’ groups.
“Malcolm Glazer has taken a club with no debt and saddled it with daily interest payments of £126,000 (€183.4m). It is totally obscene,” blasted Shareholders United vice-chairman Sean Bones.
