Seaman says Lehmann hard done by

Former Arsenal and England goalkeeper David Seaman believes his Highbury replacement Jens Lehmann has been harshly treated by Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.

Spaniard Manuel Almunia has been favoured ahead of Lehmann for the Premiership champions’ last two games and the German looks set to sit out tonight’s Champions League clash with Rosenborg.

But Seaman feels it was unfair to drop Lehmann and has called for him to be given another chance.

Seaman told the Daily Mail: “Jens is a fantastic keeper. He deserves another chance. He has made a few mistakes but on form he deserves to be the first-team choice.”

Lehmann had played 53 consecutive Premiership and Champions League games before losing his place after the defeat at Liverpool nine days ago.

Almunia came in the for the Carling Cup loss at Manchester United and retained his place for Saturday’s 3-0 win over Birmingham.

His performances have not been convincing but Wenger hinted yesterday that he would continue in goal for the crucial Highbury clash against the Norwegians.
