Pires apologises for storm in a t-shirt

Robert Pires has taken the first step towards healing his rift with the French Football Federation by apologising for wearing a shirt which contravened one of the national team’s sponsorship deals.

Pires went on television show Telefoot on October 10 dressed in Puma clothing - a move which angered FFF officials and team sponsors Adidas.

Adidas claimed the move cost them €50,000 and Pires was summoned to a meeting in Paris on Monday morning to explain his actions.

On leaving the get-together, the Arsenal midfielder said: “Everything went fine. I gave my explanation for what happened with the t-shirt thing during the Telefoot show.

“I apologised and said to them that I had no intention to be provocative. The case is now closed.

“I understand Adidas’ point of view, but as I said, I apologised and will not make that mistake again.

“I did not want to provoke anyone. I take full responsibility.”
