Cork City chairman calls for unity
Cork City chairman Brian Lennox has called on all his players to pull together.
Lennox, called for unity and togetherness at yesterday’s clear-the-air meeting at Marlborough House.
“The chairman asked us to pull together and to kick on for the rest of the season,” one player said later.
“He said that he was still confident that we can qualify for Europe.”
“The boys are all getting on fine again and we all want to start winning again starting at Dublin City on Thursday.
“We know we need to play a bit better and the results will come. The whole thing was geared to raise the spirits and to aim for European football and we are confident that we can do it.”
George O’Callaghan attended the meeting at the Douglas hotel.
O’Callaghan made critical comments at the weekend after he was dropped from the starting line-up for the Bohs game.
Fans also criticised the club heavily on Saturday and Sunday evening on local radio.
O’Callaghan today declined to comment on the outcome of yesterday’s meeting.
Several of the players spoken to by the Evening Echo said that the meeting was a low-key affair.
The club issued a statement afterwards thanking the players for their honesty, commitment and solidarity.
It read: “In relation to the negative coverage afforded to the club by some elements of the media, the management committee would like to state the following: Cork City is a club going through an enormous amount of change as we strive to achieve the level of success our fans crave.
“Change is never easy to achieve, but we are totally committed to completing the job that started when Brian took control three years ago.
“Since coming to the club, our manager Pat Dolan has acted as a catalyst for the kind of change that we as a management team believe to be necessary and we are delighted at the progress that has been made.
“As a measure of how attractive the club now is, we have a growing family of superb sponsors on board including Nissan, Guinness, O’Neill’s, the Evening Echo and Red FM.
“Finally, this season is far from over and there is a huge amount to play for. We are calling on all of the people of Cork to come out and support us.”
Speaking for the players, Dan Murray said the team had been disappointed by stories of discontent.
“We are more disappointed than anybody and we will be giving our all until the end of the season.”
