Michael Owen launched a vigorous defence of his own place in the side for tonight’s World Cup qualifier in Poland as he insisted England’s leading players were not living in a "comfort zone".

England’s weekend draw in Austria has led to question marks being placed over several members of the side, as well as the manager, with Owen admitting his “disbelief” at throwing away a 2-0 lead.
