Cunningham takes heart from Greek success
Republic of Ireland skipper Kenny Cunningham feels Greece have shown the way for other smaller countries ahead of the next World Cup.
Brian Kerr’s side host Bulgaria tonight in their final warm-up game before qualifying for the 2006 finals in Germany gets under way.
Cunningham is confident his side can go all the way, using Greece’s success at Euro 2004 as an inspiration.
He said: “Greece winning has given the so-called lesser nations some great hope. They showed that if you are organised, totally confident and have a good attitude in the squad, there is no end to what you can achieve.
“Particularly for a team like ourselves who have always been known for our spirit and determination.”
With the first World Cup qualifier against Cyprus coming at the start of next month, Kerr is anxious to gain a morale boosting result against Bulgaria tonight.
“They are a good side and play with speed and directness without being long ball. We’ve got to be on our toes against them,” said Kerr.
“They may not have done too well in the European Championships but in the qualifiers they showed how good they are, conceding just four goals, and I hope the Irish public realise how good a team they are."
