Shels ready to upset Deportivo, says Fenlon

Shelbourne manager Pat Fenlon believes keeping a clean sheet in last night’s Champions League final qualifying round has set his side up for shock success against Spanish side Deportivo La Coruna.

The eircom League champions moved the first leg from their Tolka Park ground across Dublin to Lansdowne Road and were cheered on by 24,000 fans as they held the Spanish League outfit to a 0-0 draw.

Fenlon believes his side’s battling display means they can now look forward to the second leg in Spain in two weeks.

Shelbourne were closest to scoring in the first leg and Fenlon hopes that by scoring an away goal in the Riazor they can go through to the lucrative group stage.

Fenlon said: “It’s very important that you don’t concede at home. I don’t see any reason why we can’t go to Coruna and score.

“If we do that I don’t see why we can’t go through, if we do that they have got to win the match,” Fenlon told Sky Sports News.

In a game of few chances last night, Alan Moore went closest 11 minutes from time with a glancing header which was kept out by substitute goalkeeper Gustavo Munua.

Alberto Luque had the visitors’ best chance when put through but he pulled his right-footed shot wide of the post.
