Former Newcastle and Rangers star Paul Gascoigne was rushed to hospital with suspected food poisoning ahead of this afternoon’s clash between the two clubs at St James’ Park.

The 37-year-old, who was due to be a guest of honour at the Newcastle-Gateshead Cup game, was taken ill before the kick-off and admitted to the city’s Royal Victoria Infirmary.

A spokesman for the hospital said tonight: “Mr Gascoigne is in our hospital, but the patient wishes no media coverage and we are respecting his wishes.”

The former England international was unveiled as assistant boss of Coca-Cola League Two Boston earlier this week and last played in England for Burnley two years ago.
