Argentina qualify for Copa America final

Argentina 3 Colombia 0

Argentina demolished defending champions Colombia in the Copa America semi-finals to qualify for their first final in 11 years.

It was as much as Argentina deserved, having controlled the majority of possession, while Colombia struggled to mount attacks of any note.

Carlos Tevez opened the scoring in the 33rd minute with a curled free-kick, just as he had done in the quarter-final against hosts Peru.

Colombian keeper Juan Carlos Henao moved to his right but was wrong-footed and could only palm the ball into the back of his net.

Early in the second half, Luis Gonzalez doubled the advantage after a fine move and 10 minutes from the final whistle, Juan Pablo Sorin stooped to head home and complete a comfortable victory.

Colombia appeared content to sit back and defend for much of the game, and they were duly punished as Macelo Bielsa’s men pressed forward with purpose.

After Argentina had opened the scoring, the Colombians never looked like finding a way back and rarely threatened Roberto Abbondanzieri’s goal.

The last time Argentina reached the Copa America final was in 1993, when they beat Mexico to win the title in Ecuador.
