Home is where the heart is for Sheringham

Veteran striker Teddy Sheringham turned down the chance to play abroad in favour of a move to the club he supported as a boy.

Sheringham joined West Ham United yesterday and immediately set his sights on helping them return to the top flight.

The 38-year-old former England striker is not much-loved by Hammers fans from his time spent at London rivals Tottenham and Millwall.

But his agent, Barry Nevill, said: “There was other interest in Teddy from abroad but he used to stand on the North Bank with his brother. West Ham seemed like the right club for him and the right manager.”

Sheringham, who has signed a one-year contract, was born in Highams Park and insists it is an honour to join the club he once watched from the terraces at Upton Park.

He told the club’s official website, www.whufc.com: “I am delighted to be here.”
