Blues agree fee for Ferreira

Chelsea have agreed a fee of £13.2m (€20m) for Porto full-back Paulo Ferreira.

Chelsea have agreed a fee of £13.2m (€20m) for Porto full-back Paulo Ferreira.

The London side will now open discussions over the player’s personal terms.

Ferreira is part of Portugal’s squad for Euro 2004 but was dropped after their defeat in the tournament’s opening match against Greece.

A statement on the club's official website, www.chelseafc.com, read: "Paulo Ferreira should be the first signing of José Mourinho's era.

“Porto and Chelsea have agreed a fee for the Portugal right-back of €20m – approximately £13.2m. Personal terms will now be discussed.”

The 25-year-old played a key part in Porto’s Champions League success last season and their UEFA Cup victory the year before that, both under Mourinho’s command.

Ferreira joined Porto from Vitoria Setubal in April 2002.

The 25-year-old said earlier this month: “I feel good at FC Porto but if the possibility to leave arises then it is logical this hypothesis will come about, if it is good for me and for the club.

“The president [of Porto] said I was not for sale but if the offer is good it will be difficult to refuse.

“I would be very happy if I could work with Jose Mourinho again after two

such fantastic years. Let’s see what happens.”
