Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has surprisingly named Porto midfielder Maniche ahead of Armando Petit in his team to face Greece in the opening match of Euro 2004 in Porto tomorrow.

Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has surprisingly named Porto midfielder Maniche ahead of Armando Petit in his team to face Greece in the opening match of Euro 2004 in Porto tomorrow.

Maniche is rewarded for his excellent form in Porto’s Champions League winning campaign, with Scolari saying: “Maniche has more to give as an effective offensive presence, including long-range passing and shots on goal.

Maniche will partner his club-mate Costinha in the midfield engine room, with the remainder of the team conforming to expectations.

Portugal team: Ricardo; Paulo Ferreira, Fernando Couto, Jorge Andrade, Rui Jorge; Costinha, Maniche; Luis Figo, Rui Costa, Simao Sabrosa; Pauleta.
