Brooking puts record straight over FA job
Trevor Brooking has defended his new position as the Football Association’s director of football development in the wake of strong criticism from Bolton boss Sam Allardyce.
Allardyce claimed that “the FA have appointed someone who isn’t qualified to do the technical role” previously occupied by Howard Wilkinson.
However, Brooking insists he has not been brought on board to carry out such tasks as organising coaching set-ups within the FA.
He told The Sun: “I have read what Sam says and he is entitled to his opinion, but mine isn’t a technical appointment.
“We have people at the FA like Les Reed who are qualified to carry out that part of the job.”
The FA also last night released a statement to clarify Brooking’s role.
The statement on thefa.com said: “Trevor will work closely with the England senior team head coach to provide support at all times, therefore allowing the coach to concentrate on all of the technical aspects of his job.
“Clearly Trevor’s involvement in the discussions over international selection policy and his role at the World Cup fixtures meeting in Cardiff are perfect examples of how he can support the coach in an administrative and liaison capacity.
“At National Game level Trevor is responsible for developing, promoting and improving the game at the grass roots.
“The National Game Division of the FA was founded four years ago and plays a vital role in safeguarding the future of the game at amateur level. Through his previous experience with Sport England, and indeed playing the game at such a level, Trevor’s knowledge is invaluable in continuing the excellent progress already made in this area.
“Furthermore, Les Reed as acting technical director is responsible for all areas of technical development. He has responsibility for key areas such as coach education, young player development and the England youth teams.
“But through his football and administration background, Trevor will provide general, non-technical support and knowledge to allow the acting technical director to focus on improving coaching and playing standards at the top end of the game.
“Additionally Trevor will undoubtedly carry out other responsibilities on behalf of the FA, including supporting key initiatives and performing a role with the media on occasion.
“It is precisely because of his unique breadth of experience that Trevor has been appointed to this position.”
