Premiership: Full-time review

On-loan midfielder Jermaine Pennant lifted some of the gloom at Elland Road as Leeds moved off the bottom of the table after holding Premiership leaders Chelsea to a 1-1 draw.

In the clash between the have-it-alls and the have-nots, cash-strapped Leeds stunned the Premiership big spenders with a 1-0 victory after the Arsenal 20-year-old robbed Claude Makelele in the Chelsea penalty area, beat John Terry and William Gallas before finishing with his left foot in the 18th minute.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger should have been singing the praises of Pennant as Chelsea dropped points but his team were also held 1-1 at Leicester.

A battling and sometimes fractious Liverpool performance earned Gerard Houllier’s side a 1-1 draw against Newcastle at St James’ Park in today’s early kick-off.

Danny Murphy capitalised on a sixth-minute defensive error to put the visitors ahead but Newcastle turned up the pressure in the second half and when the otherwise excellent Chris Kirkland brought down Laurent Robert, home captain Alan Shearer fired home from the penalty spot.

Fourth-placed Fulham came from behind to beat Bolton 2-1 at Loftus Road.

Kevin Davies put the visitors ahead in the 53rd minute but two goals within a minute from Sean Davis (75) and Fecundo Sava turned things around.

Former Molineux favourite Robbie Keane scored a hat-trick as Tottenham won 5-2 at home to Wolves.

The Republic of Ireland striker beat the offside trap in the 29th minute to drive home but Paul Ince equalised seconds later.

Just five minutes after half-time Frederic Kanoute headed home Darren Anderton’s cross before Keane netted twice more (75 & 83).

Alex Rae pulled one back before Stephane Dalmat restored the three-goal cushion.

Blackburn midfielder Barry Ferguson scored his first Rovers goal as Graeme Souness’s side beat the usually frugal Birmingham 4-0, who had Christophe Dugarry sent off in the second half.

The Scotland international slotted home in the 66th minute and Lucas Neill followed up with a second almost immediately before Dugarry saw his second yellow card.

Tugay and Paul Gallagher, scoring his first Premiership goal, completed the rout.

Middlesbrough’s goalless draw at home to Portsmouth was memorable only for the visitors’ Steve Stone sending-off in the last 10 minutes for two bookable offences.
