Milan and Roma share top spot

The top of the Serie A table underwent a significant change today after Roma and AC Milan both won to go joint top of the table, a point clear of Juventus.

Juve suffered their first defeat of the season in any competition at home to Inter Milan last night, and their closest rivals were both on hand to take full advantage of the reigning champions’ slip-up.

Fabio Capello’s Roma bear an ominous resemblance to the team that clinched the Scudetto in 2001.

The Giallorossi beat Lecce 3-1 today and are now the only team in the top flight yet to taste defeat in any competition this season.

Alessandro Mancini netted the opener on 19 minutes and John Carew scored the second on the stroke of half-time, before Carew set up Francesco Totti to score his fifth goal of the season and make the points safe 14 minutes from the end.

Javier Chevanton pulled a goal back for the visitors just before the end, but it was far too little too late for Lecce, who remain in trouble with only eight points to their name so far this term.

It was similarly comfortable for Milan at San Siro, as they defeated Modena 2-0 with Ukrainian goal machine Andrei Shevchenko netting both goals.

Shevchenko, with 12 Serie A goals in 11 games to his name this season, opened the scoring after 24 minutes after being put through by Italy international Andrea Pirlo.

And, after the plucky visitors had wasted good chances to equalise through Dioumansy Kamara and Nicola Amoruso, former Dynamo Kiev star Shevchenko sealed the points for the Rossoneri in the 67th minute.
