Defender William Gallas emerged as Chelsea’s unlikely match-winner at the start of their Champions League group stage and said: “That was for the whole squad.”

Gallas was making only his first start of the season after injury problems amid such strong competition for places, but he insisted that the Blues’ strong team spirit had inspired him against Sparta Prague.
