McIlroy talks tough
Sammy McIlroy has told his Northern Ireland team to tough it out when they face Ukraine on Saturday in a Euro 2004 qualifier.
The 18-man squad arrived here today after a five-hour journey from Belfast to finalise their preparations for the game.
Before taking the players on a brief training session, McIlroy spoke of the threat they will come up against this weekend.
âUkraine are a big physical team and it will be very difficult for us,â said the Northern Ireland manager. âBut it will mean more experience for my young team and that can only be a good thing.
âGetting a taste of tough opposition like Ukraine is what it is all about at this level.
âHopefully the players will thrive on the atmosphere and do themselves proud.â
McIlroy is still waiting to see his side chalk up a victory in the qualifying group.
The former Manchester United midfielder would love nothing better than to break that duck in his first match in charge since signing a new two-year deal.
McIlroy believes there is a special bond among the squad and that they will grow stronger together.
âThe mood has been great and it is marvellous to have them all together again,â he said.
âIt is a happy group. There are no cliques. The players mix well and get on with one and other.â
