Russia coach resigns ahead of Ireland game
Russia's head coach Valery Gazzayev has resigned just two weeks before the crucial Euro 2004 qualifier against Ireland.
He quit after Israel beat Russia 2-1 in a friendly.
Russia are third in Group 10 with seven points from five games. Switzerland lead with 12 points after six games, followed by Ireland with 10, who have also played six matches.
Gazzayev, who also coaches Russian Premier League leader CSKA, took over from Oleg Romantsev in July 2002.
Under Gazzayev, the team scored two impressive home victories over Ireland and Albania last year, however, the team has not won a match since they beat Romania in a friendly in February.
The Russian Soccer Union will name a new coach at its meeting next Monday.
