Millar shattered by late win
Northern Ireland Under-21 manager Roy Millar saw his side chalk up their first victory in over two years tonight but admitted the players had left him shattered.
Millar said he feared the worst when Finland equalised with just three minutes remaining in this friendly.
But goals from sub Lee McEvilly and Terry McFlynn in the 88th and 89th minutes gave the Irish a 3-1 victory at Glenavon’s Mourneview Park.
Gavin Melaugh had earlier given them the lead but they went on to squander a number of chances before the late, late show.
Millar said: "We are a very competent team. We are solid at the back but the side seem to want to win every match 1-0 instead of punishing the opposition.
"How many chances did we have? We need to score goals when we are on top of games.
"When the equaliser went in, I thought here we go again. I thought the Finns were going to rob us.
"But I thought we played well and deserved the victory. When I look at my strikers I think they are very good for this level."
The match was a warm-up fixture ahead of the European Championship qualifiers against Armenia and Greece and Millar added: "This win was a huge confidence booster for these games."
