Ronaldo needs rest after suffering "muscular pains" in the game against England, the Brazil team doctor says.

The striker was substituted in the 79th minute, but is optimistic about playing in Wednesday's semi-final.

Brazil are already without Ronaldinho, who was sent off against England.

Team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar said: "It's premature to make an evaluation on Ronaldo. First he'll have to rest and then we'll see."

Ronaldo said: "I hope I'll have enough time to rest and that I won't miss the semi-final."

Ronaldo's career looked threatened after a serious knee injury. But a comeback after more than two years on the sidelines has seen him score five times at the 2002 World Cup.

Brazil will play either Senegal or Turkey in the semi-finals on Wednesday.
