New look Becks continues to progress
David Beckham is sporting a new look as he continues his comeback programme in his bid to be fit to lead England’s challenge for World Cup glory this summer.
The Manchester United star displayed a longer version of the mohican cut which he first aired before the international with Mexico at Pride Park 12 months ago.
But more importantly the England captain appeared to be making good progress after suffering a broken foot which had originally looked certain to wreck his dreams of playing in Japan and Korea.
Beckham undertook sprinting work, did dozens of press-ups, was put through his paces on a trampoline and also kicked the ball with his right foot.
But there was still no sign of him being able to have any contact with the left foot which was still heavily bandaged.
England number two Steve McClaren said: ‘‘David is still on course and going well.
‘‘He is progressing in the right direction and the medical team are very pleased with him.’’
Meanwhile Kieron Dyer will be given ‘‘until the last possible moment’’ to prove his fitness before Sven-Goran Eriksson names his squad for the 2002 World Cup.
Eriksson has until midnight on Tuesday to announce his final squad although he has the option of replacing injured players up until the end of the month.
