Dyer given World Cup chance

Kieron Dyer has been handed the chance to resurrect his World Cup hopes after Sven-Goran Eriksson tonight summoned him to join up with the England squad to prove his fitness.

Dyer had been told he needed a ‘‘miracle’’ recovery from a knee problem in order to make the tournament after being injured at St Mary’s Stadium last weekend, but he is said to have made substantial progress over the past few days.
