Ljungberg will stay a Gunner
Arsenal midfielder Fredrik Ljungberg has given the double winners another reason to celebrate by insisting: ‘‘I’m staying at Arsenal.’’
Italian sides Juventus and Lazio are reportedly chasing the highly-rated Gunner.
But Ljungberg, named the Barclaycard player of the month yesterday, has vowed to stay with the Premiership and FA Cup winners.
‘‘I’ve heard all the rumours about the interest from Italy and I’m very flattered, but I have it really good at London and I’m staying at Arsenal,’’ he said.
‘‘Everything is perfect here for me - the team-mates, the coach and all the fans.’’
Nights like the one at Old Trafford on Wednesday, when Arsenal defeated Manchester United 1-0 to clinch the title, have obviously influenced Ljungberg’s views.
He said: ‘‘It’s like the people here are crazy. It’s a happiness and a joy I can hardly begin to believe.
‘‘I’ve been told there were 100,000 people partying outside Highbury after we had won at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
‘‘There was a real party atmosphere on our flight back to London and then we all went to China Whites and stayed way too late.
‘‘It was the first time I’d been out partying for three months so I stayed home for the rest of the next day!’’
Now Ljungberg will turn his attention to Sweden’s World Cup campaign, and in particular to the group match against England.
Sweden also face Argentina and Nigeria in what is arguably the toughest of the groups in this summer’s showpiece in Japan and South Korea.
However, it is the match against England - and the possible confrontation with some of his Arsenal team-mates - which is dominating Ljungberg’s thoughts.
‘‘It will be strange to face David Seaman, Sol Campbell, Ashley Cole and Martin Keown,’’ he said.
‘‘We’ve all been telling each other not to think about the World Cup until the league was settled.
‘‘I can say that Sweden v England is going to be a very special match for us all.’’
