Bowyer puts Leeds in front
Derby 0, Leeds 1 (half-time)
Robbie Fowler became the latest England World Cup hopeful to suffer an obscure injury as the Leeds striker limped out midway through the first half of Leeds’ meaningless clash at Derby.
David O’Leary’s side led at the break courtesy of a spectacular goal from midfielder Lee Bowyer, who linked up brilliantly with Alan Smith before lofting the ball over Mart Poom.
It took a brilliant save from Poom in the 37th minute to deny Leeds a second after Bowyer had sent Kewell away on a mesmerising run which culminated in a 20-yard left-foot drive which the Rams keeper just managed to tip away.
Poom again denied Leeds two minutes later, with Bowyer firing in a low shot after linking up with Bakke, but the 30-year-old produced a clutch save low down to his left.
