Tottenham tonight completed the signing of midfielder Jamie Redknapp on a four-year deal.

Liverpool released their 28-year-old club captain from his contract earlier today, bringing to an end an Anfield career stretching back to January 1991.

And the north London club moved swiftly to capture the former England international on a free transfer tonight.

It marks a return to White Hart Lane for Redknapp, who began his career at Spurs as a schoolboy before turning professional at Bournemouth.

He was signed by Kenny Dalglish for £350,000 from the south coast club then managed by Redknapp’s father Harry, in January 1991.

The midfielder was the longest serving player in the current Liverpool squad.

But Redknapp’s appearances for the Anfield club were severely limited in recent years by injury.

Capped 17 times by his country, he played more than 200 Premier League games for the Anfield outfit but figured in only eight games for Liverpool this season.

He had not played since the Champions League group match against Borussia Dortmund at Anfield on October 30.

Redknapp had netted twice this season, in the 4-1 Champions League qualifying victory over FC Haka in August and in the 2-0 win at Charlton on October 27.
