Soccer: Figo named World Player of the Year

Luis Figo has been named FIFA World Player of the Year.

Portugal's Luis Figo has been voted Fifa World Player Of The Year for 2001, pipping bookies' favourite David Beckham into second place.

Figo's Real Madrid team-mate Raul came third.

Figo was honoured with the award at a ceremony in Zurich this afternoon.

This is the second time that Beckham has failed to scoop the award after also finishing runner-up in 1999, when his club, Manchester United, won the Premiership, FA Cup and Champions League.
