UEFA Cup: Leeds and Rangers will be kept apart in draw
Leeds and Rangers have been kept apart for tomorrow’s UEFA Cup fourth-round draw, although there is still a possibility of a ‘Battle of Britain’ quarter-final.
Manager David O’Leary’s side, who have scraped through the first three rounds of this season’s competition, have been placed in group one, along with fellow seeds AC Milan, Valencia and Borussia Dortmund.
Among the list of possible opponents when the draw is made in Geneva at 11am are PSV Eindhoven and Lille, both of whom dropped out of the Champions League.
The French side were in the same opening group as Manchester United and proved to be tough opponents as they drew 1-1 at home, and were only beaten at Old Trafford by a last-minute David Beckham strike.
An easier tie for Leeds would see them up against Roda JC Kerkrade from Holland or a return to Switzerland, having beaten Grasshoppers of Zurich in the last round, to face Servette who are based in Geneva.
Rangers, meanwhile, are among the non-seeded teams in group two along with Hapoel Tel Aviv, Slovan Liberec of the Czech Republic and AEK Athens.
Dick Advocaat’s side will meet either Feyenoord, Lyon, Parma or Inter Milan, the Italian giants who disposed of Ipswich in last week’s third round.
However, the draw for the quarter-finals is made immediately afterwards and as it is open, Leeds may yet be paired with Rangers, although both would obviously have to come through their fourth-round games.
The fourth-round ties will be played on February 21 and 28, with the two legs of the quarter-finals on March 14 and 21.
