Premiership: D'Urso may look again at Shearer incident

Referee Andy D’Urso could be asked to look again at the incident which brought Alan Shearer the second red card of his career.

Shearer was dismissed late in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Charlton for allegedly elbowing defender Jon Fortune after D’Urso’s attention was drawn to the clash by one of his assistants.

The 31-year-old former England captain was astonished and pleaded his innocence after the game.

Backed by manager Bobby Robson, he intends to appeal against the decision which could cost him the first three-match ban of his career.

Football Association spokesman Adrian Bevington yesterday confirmed that, if United do lodge an appeal, D’Urso could be asked to have another look at the incident.

‘‘Newcastle do have a right of appeal because Alan Shearer did receive a red card and a straight dismissal,’’ Bevington said.

‘‘There is a standard procedure. If Newcastle inform us that they wish to appeal we will then have a discussion, and the referee will be offered the opportunity to look at it again.’’
