Soccer: Stam tests positive for nandrolone

Lazio defender Jaap Stam has tested positive for the banned substance nandrolone.

The former Manchester United defender was tested after Lazio's Serie A encounter with Atalanta on October 14.

The news was confirmed by a spokesman for the Italian Olympic Committee. Claudio Meli said that under Italian rules Stam has immediately been suspended.

A mandatory double check test will be performed. The 29-year-old moved to Lazio from Old Trafford at the beginning of this season in a deal reportedly worth £18m.
