Champions League: O'Neill promises fighting finish

Martin O'Neill admitted Celtic were taught a lesson by Porto but vowed to fight to the end in this first Champions League group stage.

The Scottish champions, who topped Group E before arriving at the Estadio das Antas, were "well beaten" 3-0 after a Clayton double and shot from Mario Silva.

They now lie back in third place, a point behind the Portuguese outfit, and two adrift of Italian giants Juventus.

"We were well beaten," admitted O'Neill. "We got off to a very poor start.

"I think we became unnerved by that, but even so I think we were capable of performing a lot better than we did.

"I was disappointed with the performance more than anything else and we were second best all evening.

"We have not had too many disappointing evenings, but it was disappointing to go a goal down so early.

"We were looking for some energy, but we wouldn't find it and eventually we were well beaten which was disappointing."

O'Neill acknowledged that his team have to beat Rosenborg in Norway next week.

He added: "We haven't given up hope, but we'll have to go to Rosenborg and win the game.

"But we will be giving everything and if we don't make the next stages we're going to go out with a fight.

"I want to go into the Juventus game meaning something so it's vital we get something in Norway."

Porto coach Octavio Machado was delighted with his side's display - but still feels that Celtic can go through.

He said: "It was a fair result and it was to be expected with all the hard work we have done.

"We are very happy with this result and we played very well to win this game.

"They are a quality side and they will still be hoping to beat Rosenborg next week so it's still possible for them to qualify for the next stages."
