Premiership: Westerveld wants to leave Liverpool
Sander Westerveld wants to leave Liverpool, after being told he is no longer wanted at the club.
A number of errors prompted a double-swoop from boss Gerard Houllier last week. He has signed Jerzy Dudek and Chris Kirkland.
Westerveld claimed Houllier promised him he would stay number one and a new keeper was not being sought.
Houllier denied this.
"We have spoken with each other and we both have a completely different opinion about the matter," Westerveld said.
"There was no point in talking any further. Liverpool is moving on with two other keepers and I will be looking for a new club.
"That is all I have to say about it."
Houllier said: "I told Sander and I repeated it to his agent that I was considering signing a new goalkeeper.
"I said that either Sander succeeds himself and becomes a better goalkeeper or I would buy a new one because I want to win the title.
"I have read about these promises I was supposed to have made. I can tell you I never made any promises to any player. It is not a manager's job to promise a player he will always be in the team."
Houllier even admitted that it was that error in the 2-1 defeat at Bolton that finally convinced him to replace Westerveld.
He said: "What happened at Bolton played a major part."
