Soccer: United continue Sheringham talks

Manchester United have not given up hope of persuading Teddy Sheringham to sign a new contract after Spurs manager Glenn Hoddle confirmed his interest in the England striker.

Hoddle is keen to take Sheringham back to Tottenham four years after he left to join United in a £3.5m deal.

The 35-year-old is mulling over United's offer of a new one-year deal, which is believed to be worth £35,000-a-week.

Hoddle is closely monitoring Sheringham's talks with United and is ready to step in with a contract offer when the double footballer of the year becomes a free agent on July 1.

United's director of communications Paddy Harverson stressed talks were still on-going.

"We're still talking to Teddy and it's just a matter of seeing if we can agree terms," he said.

Sheringham's agent Barry Nevill claimed the ball was still in United's court - but only for the time being.

"We are still talking to Manchester United," he said. "Teddy's contract doesn't expire until June 30 and Manchester United have first refusal."
