Soccer: Martyn reflects on what might have been

Nigel Martyn bemoaned his side's ill-fortune after they crashed out of the Champions League 3-0 to Valencia.

Juan Sanchez seemed to use his arm to open the scoring for the Spanish side and there was no way back for Leeds when the striker added a second straight after the restart.

And Valencia skipper Gaizka Mendieta finished David O'Leary's side off soon after.

"Those two goals at the start of the second half knocked the stuffing out of us," said the Leeds keeper.

"In the first half we competed well and we should have gone in at half-time 0-0.

"But Mendieta put in a great cross from the right which skidded across the area and Sanchez tried to get the ball with his chest but it's come off his arm.

"It happened to us in Madrid (Raul's handball goal for Real) and we've been a bit unlucky again.

"We're disappointed. We felt we could come here, contain them and hit them on the break. Credit to them they caught us cold at the start of the second half.

"But it's been a tremendous achievement by us. We've gone beyond where we should have gone. But in this game it's just not happened for us."
