Champions League: Giggs fears one-season wonders tag
Ryan Giggs claims winning the Champions League two years ago with Manchester United will mean nothing unless they do it again.
Ahead of the win-or-bust clash with Bayern Munich, Giggs is anxious that United do not go down in the annals of Champions League history as one-season wonders.
He desperately wants to lift the European Cup with United again to prove they are one of Europe's great sides.
"We've got to prove that the Champions League triumph was not a one-off," he said.
"It was a great achievement, but in my eyes it doesn't mean anything unless we do it again.
"We have the capabilities and we have everything needed to win the trophy. We have to believe in that and do it again.
"It would be a big disappointment if I ended my career at United and I had only won one European Cup winner's medal considering the team we've got here when we know we're still a maturing side."
Giggs knows United will need to draw on the spirit of '99 if they are going to overturn Bayern's 1-0 lead from the quarter-final first leg at Old Trafford and triumph in the Olympic Stadium.
United have rarely played well in Europe since winning the Champions League and they must hit the heights of two years ago if they are going to beat Bayern.
Giggs feels the newly-crowned Premiership champions have such a performance in their locker and he believes they could go on to win in Milan on May 23 if they can defeat Bayern.
"I think if we can get through this one, then we will go on to win it because of the impetus that winning this one will bring," he said.
"It could be the lift we need. We've got to get back to the way we were playing two years ago when we feared no one and we were playing great football."
