Soccer: Eircom league round-up

Cork City 1 Longford Town 0

A Kevlin Flanagan penalty gave Cork City their first win over Longford in five meetings this season.

In a match City dominated, their only goal came after just four minutes.

Alan Murphy took down City striker James Mulligan and Flanagan's spot kick squirmed under the body of Stephen O'Brien to cross the line.

Shamrock Rovers 1 Bray Wanderers 2

Jason Byrne scored twice as Bray did their hopes of qualifying for Europe no harm as Rovers' expense.

Byrne put Bray in front on 22 minutes when heading over the advancing Robbie Horgan.

Sean Francis headed an out-of-sorts Rovers level a minute before the break.

But Byrne struck for what proved the winner nine minutes into the second-half.

UCD 1 Finn Harps 1

Tony McDonnell earned UCD a point with a headed equaliser on 38 minutes to inflict further relegation worries on Harps.

Fergal Harkin had given Harps hope in this basement battle when shooting them in front on 18 minutes after good work by Johnny Kenny and then Kevin McHugh who crossed.

But the draw means they are now still five points behind College second from bottom.

Shelbourne 3 Kilkenny City 1

Stephen Geoghegan scored twice to put champions Shelbourne eight points clear at the top of the table.

Owen Heary gave Shels the lead on 36 minutes but Dutchman Raimond Roos shocked Reds when punishing a mistake by Steve Williams to level a minutes before the break.

But Geoghegan, a half-time sub, scored two tap-in goals on 54 and 79 minutes to see Shels comfortably home.

FAI Cup

Portmarnock 1 Dundalk 0

Non-league Portmarnock enjoyed the greatest day in their history as they knocked eight-times winners Dundalk out of the FAI Cup.

Midfielder Keith Bruen was Portmarnock's hero with the only goal on 35 minutes.

It came in dramatic circunstances after John Connolly had saved a penalty from Craig Bolton after Connolly had pulled down Joe Feeney.

But from the resultant corner taken by Barry Flynn, Bruen arrived to head home a glorious winner.
