Premiership: Gerrard delighted with Reds victory
Liverpool's Steven Gerrard could hardly contain his delight after his side completed the double over Manchester United with a 2-0 win at Anfield.
First-half strikes from Gerrard and Robbie Fowler were enough to see off United.
But they had to mount a stern defensive display after being reduced to 10 men when Danny Murphy was sent off with 20 minutes to go.
"All the lads knew that was 1979 the last time (Liverpool did the double over Man Utd) and we were all up for it, but with any win over Manchester United you have to be delighted," Gerrard said.
"We could have scored a couple more to put the game out of reach, but they have put us under a lot of pressure in the last 20 minutes.
"We all had to dig in and the lads have done a superb job.
"Everyone in Liverpool will be delighted and out getting drunk tonight - it is brilliant."
Gerrard was forced to pull out of the England squad for the game against Albania in midweek with a back injury, but felt he was well on the way to a return to full fitness.
"I am feeling quite good at the moment and my injuries are getting a lot better and I am sure that they will go," he added.
