Soccer: Champions League fans to be frisked

Arsenal fans are to be frisked for dairy products and meat sandwiches when they arrive in Munich tomorrow for a Champions League match.

The measure comes as mainland Europe's first foot and mouth outbreak was confirmed in a dairy herd in the Loire Valley.

The cows were in fields adjoined by a neighbouring farm which bought sheep from Britain last month. All 114 cows were slaughtered.

Tests are also being conducted to confirm the presence of the disease on a second French farm, near the town of Coulommiers, east of Paris.

And health authorities reported the first suspected cases of foot and mouth disease in Italy.

A European Union veterinary panel met in Brussels and recommended an export ban for French livestock.

The Bavarian Health Ministry also said it would put into place special controls at a Europeans Champions League match between Bayern Munich and Arsenal, with customs officials confiscating meat and milk products from British fans.

The state farmers union also warned its members not to go to the match.
