Premiership: McClaren the man to succeed Ferguson, says Scholes

Paul Scholes has claimed that Steve McClaren is the players' choice to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson as manager at Manchester United.

Paul Scholes has claimed that Steve McClaren is the players' choice to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson as manager at Manchester United.

There have been a number of high-profile names tipped to take over when Sir Alex retires at the end of next season.

But Scholes believes United have a ready-made successor in their current assistant boss.

"It will be very strange after the gaffer has gone and a different manager comes in," said Scholes.

"I think it would be better to have someone who knows the players and Steve has to be in with a shout.

"It means we would not have to start afresh with a new man."

He told the Mirror: "We would have someone who knows the players inside out, someone who knows what he can get out of the players here."
