David de Gea says Jose Mourinho will be a winner
Last summer goalkeeper De Gea signed a new contract with United after coming close to joining Real Madrid.
And the 25-year-old Spain international has continued to be linked with Real since then.
But in an interview with Marca, De Gea has spoken about making âa great teamâ with Mourinho, who was appointed as United boss last week.
De Gea said: âTalk about Jose Mourinho and youâre talking about a winner.
âWinning is Unitedâs, Joseâs and my philosophy. We can make a great team and I welcome him.â
He added: âIâve got three more years on my contract with United and the desire to win more titles here.
âWhen it comes to United, if you donât win everything, itâs not good enough.
âThe FA Cup is important for the club, itâs important for the fans, and itâs an important step towards winning major titles again.â
Unitedâs FA Cup final win at Wembley last month brought the clubâs first major trophy since Alex Fergusonâs retirement in 2013.
But United are by no means guaranteed success under Mourinho, according to the clubâs former midfielder Paul Ince.
Ince, who won two Premier League titles and two FA Cups during a six-year spell at Old Trafford, believes Mourinho is the right choice to replace Louis van Gaal.
But the ex-England international said the âSpecial Oneâ must first rediscover his mojo if he is to guide United back to the top of European football.
âI like to think theyâve got the right man, but you never know,â Ince said.
âYou hear chairmen saying weâve got the right man here and six months down the line they lose their job.
âYou see it all the time. Iâm sure when Van Gaal went to Man United everybody said âyeah, weâve the right manâ.
âHe was successful at Ajax and Barcelona but two seasons down the line heâs got the sack.â
Some observers feel Mourinhoâs star has faded following a disappointing second spell in charge of Chelsea, which ended in his departure by mutual consent in December after losing nine out of 16 Premier League games, and Ince agrees something was not quite right.
Taking time out from promoting a short film entitled The GuvâNor, in which he stars alongside Jimmy Bullard as part of a Carling advertisement campaign, Ince said: âI felt last year at Chelsea he didnât seem the same Mourinho.
âSomething was bugging him last year. I donât know what it was, but he wasnât happy at Chelsea and you could see that in the way he was acting and talking, he didnât seem comfortable for some reason.
âIt was a good time for him to get out and recharge his batteries. Heâs a world-class manager, now at the biggest club in the world.â
Inceâs playing career spanned 20 years and also included spells at West Ham, Mourinhoâs former club Inter Milan, Liverpool and Middlesbrough.
âMourinhoâs CV speaks for itself. Heâs won all over the place, Champions Leagues, titles and heâs a winner. He knows how to win,â he said.
âSo from a credential point of view youâve got to say heâs the right man, but weâll have to see what happens in the next couple of months.
âHow is Mourinho going to play? He likes his experienced players. What does that say about the young players?
âHis style of football really at the back end of last year wasnât great and this is the biggest thing with Manchester United fans, they want the Man United style of football.â
Ince spent two seasons as an Inter player before returning to England with Liverpool in 1997 and watched with interest the 2012 ITV documentary on Mourinho, who had left Milan for Real Madrid in 2010.
âWhen Jose becomes available every club is going to want him and (Unitedâs executive vice-chairman) Edward Woodward must have thought if we donât get him now we might have missed the boat,â Ince added.
âI saw the documentary which showed the Inter players crying in the corridors with Mourinho. It just showed what the players thought about him, how they performed under him and he has to get that back.â
