St Patrick's Athletic see off Bohemians in fiery Dublin derby
Goals from Mark Timlin, Christy Fagan, and Billy Dennehy gave St Pat’s all three points from this hard-fought Dublin derby win over Bohemians, who finished with 10 men after Ismahil Akinade was dismissed midway through the second half.
A crowd of 1,718 at Richmond Park saw a ferocious start by the home side, who raced into a 2-0 lead before the clock had passed the quarter-hour mark.
Timlin opened the scoring on five minutes when he headed past Dean Delany from close range after the Bohs defence failed to clear a dangerous cross from Ian Bermingham.
Bermingham assisted again on 13 minutes in a good Pat’s movement that also involved Dennehy and which ended with a Fagan glancing the ball past Delany from no more than six yards out.
Fagan was then given a gilt-edged chance to net his second of the night on 19 minutes when he pounced on Paddy Kavanagh’s mistake but Delany blocked his subsequent shot.
Bohs fought back and Brendan Clarke made a low diving save from Kurtis Byrne on 22 minutes before saving well from Mark Quigley’s free kick two minutes later.
Quigley had an even more disappointing outcome from his next free, on 28 minutes, which flashed high over the bar.
Bohs came out with a much better attitude at the start of the second period and enjoyed long spells of positive play but couldn’t convert any of that into goalscoring chances.
Any hopes they had of getting anything from the game was made harder on 66 minutes when Akinade was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Billy Dennehy nodded in the third goal, from a Conan Byrne cross, on 89 minutes.
