A fan’s favourite, the 24-year-old midfielder emerged as a key player at Turner’s Cross - first in Tommy Dunne’s First Division-winning team and then under John Caulfield - before leaving to join Cambridge United in December of 2014.

His debut for the League Two club was memorable, Morrissey coming on as a second-half substitute at Old Trafford as Cambridge were beaten 3-0 by Manchester United in the FA Cup in February of this year. However, game time has proved hard to come by for the former Ringmahon Rangers man this season and it’s understood that he is now on the brink of returning to Cork, as manager Caulfield continues to build his squad for the 2016 season.

Dundalk’s Sean Maguire has indicated that he too is close to signing for City. The former West Ham striker is considering his options beyond Oriel Park and revealed that there has been interest in him from both Cork and St Pats, as well as clubs in England including Accrington Stanley.

“If I am going to stay in Ireland, I think I’d go to Cork,” said Maguire. “I think it’s where I would get the most opportunities. I met up with John (Caulfield) and he told me he knows what type of player I am and that I’m the type of player he likes.”

Meanwhile, Dundalk have confirmed the signing of former UCD midfielder Robbie Benson. “I’m over the moon to be here,” said the 23-year-old. “I have moved on from UCD and this was really my first time experiencing the off-season and the madness that it is. I’m really happy to get it sorted out.”
