Barcelona starlet Deulofeu back at Toffees in permanent deal
The 21-year-old has signed a three-year-contract â with the option of a further year â in a deal worth ÂŁ4.2million.
Deulofeu impressed on loan at Goodison Park in the 2013-14 campaign but returned to his parent club and was subsequently loaned out again to Sevilla.
He has long been touted as one of Barcelonaâs next generation of stars but has failed to establish himself in first-team football either with the Catalan club or elsewhere and that is reflected in the purchase price.
However, for that reason Barcelona have protected themselves against losing one of their brightest young talents by insisting on a release clause within the first two years if they meet certain conditions and having the right of first refusal if Everton decide to sell the player.
Toffees boss Roberto Martinez, who had a good relationship with Deulofeu, has kept tabs on the youngster and moved quickly to make him his second signing of the summer after capturing out-of-contract Manchester United midfielder Tom Cleverley.
âGerard needs no introduction to anyone here at Everton, for we are all well aware of his incredible footballing talent,â Martinez told evertonfc.com.
âWe got to know him really well from his loan period, not only as such a talented player but also his great character. He will be a fantastic asset.â
Deulofeu - a product of Barcaâs famed La Masia academy - made 29 appearances during his first stint with Everton, scoring on his debut in the Capital One Cup against Stevenage and going on to add three Premier League goals, including a memorable equaliser against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in December 2013.
Although he played a similar number of matches at Sevilla, scoring three times, his form tailed off towards the end of the season and he found himself on the bench for most of the run-in. He did not even make the squad for the clubâs Europa League final victory.
He accepted he had a more testing year than he had expected, writing on Instagram last month: âA tough and difficult year for me but perhaps itâs also the year in which Iâve learned the most.â Martinez will hope to get more out of the player than managed by Sevilla coach Unai Emery, whose assessment was at best mixed.
âHe has incredible qualities but lacks others. Put him out there, one on one and ... pfff,â he told the Guardian last month.
âBut make him play football with team-mates, on a big pitch, and itâs hard. He doesnât have the maturity or capacity for sacrifice yet.â Martinezâs summer priorities were a player who can play as a number 10, a centre-back and a midfielder.
Deulofeu and Cleverley tick two of those boxes with Juventus defender Angelo Ogbonna believed to be a player of interest, although Press Association Sport understands Crystal Palaceâs Scott Dann is not being considered despite speculation to the contrary.
âIt was always our intention to work extremely hard behind the scenes to get some really good business done early on during the transfer window,â added Martinez.
âOur objective was to secure Tom and Gerard as quickly as we could and Iâm really pleased this is exactly what weâve done.
âHaving done this now, we will have more time over the remainder of the window to carry on strengthening our squad, which is already strong, and we will use this time ahead of us well.â
Meanwhile Marseille have grudgingly accepted an offer from West Ham for forward Dimitri Payet.
Payet, who has played 15 times for France is set to become new manager Slaven Bilicâs first major signing since succeeding Sam Allardyc.
Marseille issued a statement saying it is âabsolutely not their intentionâ to sell Payet but they were forced to accept the bid after a dispute with the player and his agent over a new contract.
The French club claimed West Ham have offered Payet a ââgolden bridgeââ - a six-year contract worth âŹ30m - to play in the Premier League.
Everton were also reportedly interested in signing Payet, but it appears the 28-year-old will now join West Ham.
