Luiz: We believe title will be ours
Chelsea, the 2012 winners, will play Atletico Madrid in the Champions League last four after overturning a two-goal deficit to Paris St Germain.
Domestic duty is the immediate priority, with tomorrow’s match at Swansea as Chelsea bid to keep pace at the top with Liverpool and Manchester City, who meet at Anfield on the same day.
“It’s still possible to win the league, so come on, let’s enjoy the position we are in and believe, like we did against Paris St Germain,” Luiz said.
“We need to have faith because we can still do it.
“Mathematically it’s still possible but every game in the Premier League is difficult, as it will be on Sunday.
“Swansea are tough opponents and we’ve seen in the last few seasons, every time we go there it’s a difficult game. We need to try to do our best and win the match.”
Looking ahead to the April 22 trip to Atletico, Luiz stressed the importance of a strong showing in the first leg.
“It’s always good to play the second leg at home, but only if you do well in the first leg,” he added. If not, your heart can stop, like the matches in Paris and Napoli (in 2012), we don’t want that to happen again.”
Chelsea face Swansea tomorrow with Jose Mourinho determined to focus on the Premier League despite anticipation building towards the tie with Atletico Madrid.
Mourinho decided not to hold his weekly media conference in expectation of questions related to yesterday’s Champions League draw.
Mourinho wrote off Chelsea’s Premier League title hopes after the loss at Crystal Palace, but with Liverpool and Manchester City locking horns at Anfield tomorrow, the Swansea match represents an opportunity.
Chief executive Ron Gourlay said: “If someone said to me at the start of the season that with five weeks to go, we are still in the Champions League semi-final and in the shake-up for the Premier League, I would have taken that. This is what we work for all season.
“Everyone says we’ve got to strengthen the team but we have a fantastic team. We keep hearing we’re not strong enough but we have a fantastic pool of players and a great manager.”
Mourinho has questioned the quality of his strikers, although the little used Demba Ba netted the decisive goal in Tuesday’s quarter-final win over Paris St Germain.
Mourinho wants to recruit a ’killer’ goalscorer this summer, which will require a major outlay.
Gourlay added: “If the right players are available to strengthen the team we’ll look at it, but that’s at the end of the season.”
Ba could be given a first Premier League start since October at Swansea, but Eden Hazard has a calf injury and is likely to miss out on a first return to the Liberty Stadium since he was sent off for kicking a ball boy during the Capital One Cup semi-final in January 2013.
Midfielder Ramires is back from a three-match ban.
For Swansea’s 20-goal striker Wilfried Bony, meanwhile, tomorrow’s game offers a chance of a famous win. “Chelsea are top players, and we are expecting an extremely tough game. We are all confident, we just have to show it in the game from the first minute.”
