Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas admitted he felt “ashamed” and “embarrassed” after his team’s hammering at Manchester City.

Jesus Navas, who opened the scoring after only 14 seconds, and Sergio Aguero each scored twice, with a Sandro own-goal and an Alvaro Negredo effort helping City equal Tottenham’s worst defeat since the start of the Premier League. Spurs have been undermined by their lack of goal threat this season and Villas-Boas’ desperation to change that was indicated by his decision to bring Emmanuel Adebayor back into the fold after freezing the Togo striker out in the summer.

Villas-Boas used the club’s official Twitter account to apologise to the Spurs fans and did not attempt to dress up his disappointment.
